Frequently Asked Questions

Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs

What will I eat?
The food at camp is typical of a college freshman year cafeteria and students are given the freedom to make their own choices.  This may be an adjustment for some.  Salad, fruit, vegetables, sandwich deli bar and a different hot entrée accompany each lunch and dinner.  Daily menus are posted.  If you have special dietary needs or allergies, please contact us prior to your arrival.  Kosher meals are available for $75 per week.  We know students prefer restaurants so we have designated at least one evening per week for an off campus meal.  Students are responsible for purchasing all their off-campus meals.  Students are also given the opportunity to purchase snacks at off campus activities.  The average student spends $25-30 per week on food.  In addition, students are provided refrigerators in their rooms.  Most late afternoons there is a convenient store run to replenish your stash in your refrigerator.  If you are a “bottomless pit” you may want to ask your parents to stock your refrigerator at check-in.

Can I receive mail while at camp?
Of course! Receiving mail is always fun - especially while you are away from home. Mail can be sent to 610 S. Henderson Rd. King of Prussia, PA 19406. Just tell your friends and family to clearly mark your name and which Julian Krinsky program you are attending. If your program is at Arcadia University or Penn your mailing address will be given to you in your arrival packet.

Can I receive e-mail while at camp?
While at camp you have your very own inbox. Tell your friends and family to go our website jkcp.com and click on the link for E-mail a Camper. Select the name of your camp from the drop box. Enter the camper's first and last names. After typing the message click "send." Your mail will be delivered to you each day. You may also check your own personal e-mail address every day.

Where can my parents view photos of camp?
During the camp session, families and friends are all encouraged to visit the photo gallery on our website. Photographs of students will be posted weekly. Unfortunately, we can not guarantee that every student will appear in the photo gallery every day.

Can I have visitors while at camp?
Parents and guests are always welcome to visit at any time. (Please note that students are generally off campus on weekends.) Please call our office to schedule a visit or guided tour. Only parents and relatives may visit the dorm rooms with the camper.

If you would like to leave campus with your friends and family, proper identification and written confirmation from the parent or guardian are required before the student is permitted off campus. For insurance purposes the driver of the vehicle must be at least 21 years old.

What is your policy on smoking and substance use?
How do I get to and from the Philadelphia International Airport and 30th Street Train Station?
Transportation can be purchased to or from the airport or train station for $30 one way or $50 round trip. Students must notify JKCP of their arrival and departure dates and times after receiving the arrival packet. Upon flight arrival, students should make their way from their gate to the baggage claim area where a staff member will welcome them. Since students are coming from all over the country and the world we need to be informed in advance of all flight information. If arriving by train, staff members will meet students at the top of the train platform stairs. If flight and train information is not received two days prior to arrival or departure we will not be held responsible for last minute changes.

How do I get from activity to activity?
Students walk between activities themselves. Counselors rarely walk students to their on campus activities as they are generally in the same building or nearby facility. Counselors are stationed throughout campus and are always at cross walks and in unfamiliar areas.

Can I bring my cell phone?
While we appreciate that your family's desire to keep in touch with you and do not discourage students from bringing cell phones, we also are aware of their disruptive nature. Therefore, we are prohibiting the public use of cell phones by campers from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily (except for emergencies) especially during class and activity periods. (However, campers may use cell phones in the privacy of their rooms at any time). Constant abuse of this policy will lead to confiscation of the cell phone. If confiscated, phones will be returned at the end of the session.

Is your tennis program run at indoor or outdoor courts?
While most of our tennis classes are taught on outdoor courts, a percentage of your on-court time is scheduled indoors. This is an opportunity for students to take a break from the summer heat and sun. When it rains, everyone plays indoors. Inclement weather does not postpone our program. If you sign up for a full week of tennis, you will get a full week of tennis.

Where will I spend my last week of Junior and Senior Tennis and Golf Camp?
The last week of tennis and golf camp will be held at the Westtown School in Westtown, PA. Westtown School is a co-educational, college preparatory day and boarding school for grades PK - 12 founded 1799.

What time do we go to sleep?
Students are advised to go to their rooms at certain times depending on student's ages. As long as they are quiet there is no lights out policy. We enforce lights out at a certain time but have no control over what time a child actually falls asleep.

Do I have to clean my room?
You are responsible for keeping your private space neat, clean, and presentable. After a hard days work, you will want to come home to a nice space to relax. Hallways and bathrooms are cleaned daily by the colleges.

What time should I arrive at my program?
Please check your arrival packet as times vary between programs.

Where do I keep my money while at camp?
Most students set up a bank account at registration. The account allows you to draw cash on a daily basis, and the balance is returned at departure. We discourage students to keep more the $10 or $20 on their person. The amount of spending money parents send with their child is at their own discretion. We suggest bringing approximately $75-$125 per week for laundry, off-campus trip meals, snacks and personal expenses.

How are the weekend trips supervised?
Students 12 and under are put into groups and spend the day with a counselor. Unless requested, all students 13 years and older are allowed to walk around by themselves. These students are encouraged to walk in groups of three or more. Various familiar "hotspots" are set up so students can quickly find counselors throughout the day. Our level of supervision greatly depends on the location of the trips e.g. New York City verses a local movie theater.

What happens if I lose my room key?
A $200 room key deposit must be paid before check-in for overnight students. The full amount will be returned at the end of the summer providing the room key is returned and no damage was done to the room. If you lose your room key notify your residential counselor immediately. The locks will need to be changed and you will be issued a new key deducting $100 from your room key deposit.

How can I become a JKCP employee?
If you would like to become a residential counselor, director, coach, nurse or teacher at JKCP please visit the Employee section of our website.

How can I apply?
You may apply online at jkcp.com. Be sure to apply early to reserve your spot!

Can I attend if I live outside the United States?
We encourage overseas campers to spend their summer with us. In fact, in 2005 we were home to international students from over 30 countries. We do, however, incur additional expenses to accommodate the needs of our international students, including airport round-trip ground transportation, specialized staff, laundry and linens ($150 per student).

What type of laundry and linen services are available?
You may rent linens on a weekly basis. The fee is $12 per week and includes two sheets, a pillowcase, a blanket and two towels. We also provide a weekly laundry service for $1 per pound ($10 minimum).

What should I bring to camp?
In your arrival packet you will receive a complete packing list including sportswear, sports equipment, linens, and casual clothing. Please leave your jewelry, designer clothing, televisions, DVD players and valuable personal items at home. We are not responsible for any personal items brought to camp. With all the planned activities, you will not have time to sit and watch television in your room.

Where do the instructors and counselors come from?
Residential counselors are typically 21-year-old college seniors specializing in education or hospitality. Classes and workshops are taught by experienced teachers from schools and colleges in the Philadelphia area. Tennis coaches are USPTA, USPTR or JKST qualified and Golf Professionals are PGA or EGTF qualified.

What happens if I am sick or injured?
A nurse is available 24/7 and a doctor, pediatric nurse practitioner and trainer are always on call. There is a hospital within ten minutes of all our programs. If you are not feeling well please tell your instructor or counselor immediately so we can help you feel better faster! If you are seen by our family practitioner, the office will bill your parents directly, not your individual insurance company.

What is the difference between the resident, extended day and day options?
Residential students stay on campus for meals, housing and evening activities. Day students are on campus for daily programming and lunch only. Day students are invited to join residential campers for dinner and evening activities at additional costs. Extended day (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) includes breakfast and extra activities.

How do I choose which JK camp to attend?
At JKCP you don't have to choose just one! You can build your summer with us. Spend one week at tennis camp and spend the next cross training at Canyon Ranch. Or take advantage of our enrichment program to sharpen your skills before heading to Philadelphia for an internship.

How do I check to see if there are still openings for the weeks I want to attend?
Please call the office at 610.265.9401 or 866.879.5527 to check availability. To ensure your spot please apply online at jkcp.com today!

Do you offer a birthday package and what does it include?
If you are spending your birthday with us, be sure to let us know! If you wish we can arrange dinner with two friends and a director or favorite counselor at a local restaurant - you will even get a cake. Please include additional $75 payment with balance due.

Are we permitted to tip the directors, pros and counselors?
Our pay schedule for counselors and instructors is among the highest in the industry. In keeping with guidelines from the American Camping Association, we ask that you refrain from tipping individual staff members.
