Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs

The Discovery Track offers dozens of classes covering an incredibly wide range of interesting subjects. This is your chance to discover new ideas, skills and experiences in a friendly atmosphere of exploration and growth. Don’t worry if you’re trying something for the first time! We have several groups for each class and will make sure you’re in the right one for your level of experience.

The Discovery Track has two modules: Morning Discovery classes and Afternoon Discovery workshops.

In the morning, campers have the option of taking either FOUR Discovery Tracks or TWO Discovery Tracks and ONE Focus Track. Morning classes meet for 90 minutes per day on either Monday, Wednesday and Friday (MWF), or Tuesday and Thursday (TTh). When combining Discovery Tracks with a Focus Track, please be sure to select courses on alternate days. Campers choose their Morning Discovery courses for the full session while completing their application.

Afternoon Discovery Workshops run from 1:00 to 2:30. Each week, campers choose two that are being offered that week. Click here for a comprehensive list: Afternoon Discovery.

Ballroom Dancing

There are a lot of great reasons to take Ballroom Dancing: school dances, family celebrations and weddings, to name a few. At every one of them you're going to want to step onto the dance floor with confidence. This class will teach you the basic steps and turns in Swing, Fox Trot, Waltz, Cha-Cha, and other dances. Another reason to do it? More fun than you ever imagined! Join us and find out.

Coffee House Philosophy

What do a double foam latte with chocolate sprinkles on top and Plato's “Republic” have in common? Deep isn't it? How about an iced mocha arctic freezer with cream and extra cocoa and Nietzsche's “Beyond Good and Evil”? Starting to get the idea? They're all part of Coffee House Philosophy, our synthesis of great tastes and great minds.

We're going to discuss the big ideas: What is beauty? Should sex and violence be allowed in movies, on TV and the web? Even, what is the meaning of Life? We'll consult the works of influential philosophers and share our own ideas - all stimulated by an exotic cup of joe. Join us for new flavors in coffee and thought.

Comics and Cartooning

Do you like the hard, sharp style of “X-Men” and “Justice League,” with their strong use of color and exciting stories, or does the humor of “Calvin & Hobbes” or “Garfield” appeal to you more? Either way, you’re bound to enjoy this immersion in the exaggerated universe of cartoons and comics.

This is a hands-on class designed to bring out the writer and/or illustrator in everyone who enjoys comics. We’re going to create our own cartoons and comic strips using either your original drawings or images we find in print or on the Web. You’ll work individually or with a team to devise the story line, write the joke or caption, and put the script and images together in a whole new production.

Computer Game Design

You know this from experience: every great game combines great design and great programming. This class will focus on the first part of the equation. We’ll break it down and consider elements like design documents, game design, psychology, character design and game mechanics. Join us for all that and some awesome gaming!

Cooking Fast, Fresh and Fun

Chanterelle or Shiitake? Couscous or Coulis? Thyme or tarragon? Which is it? Or try this one: What type of restaurant are you in if you’re ordering Coconut Panna Cotta? Here’s where you’ll find out.

If you like food, you’ll love our Cooking Track. We’ll turn you on to new and unusual foods, and teach you about their availability, freshness and preparation. You’ll watch our expert chefs at work and, best of all, sample the tasty results. Plus, for students wanting a little hands-on experience, there will be opportunities to assist in the demonstrations.

Creative Writing

Do you enjoy keeping a diary, writing letters to friends, or even working on stories in your spare time? Or do you just really love to read, and think writing might be fun?

This course is designed to provide a stimulating environment for beginning or more advanced writers. We’ll work on literary technique and style, and look at successful authors to see how they did it. During class, group collaboration and role playing will provide material for characters, plots, scenes and dialogue.

Start by making a note to try Creative Writing. We’ll help you learn to think like a writer and develop ideas inspired by the world around you.

Crime Scene Forensics

Put on your surgical gloves as your team enters our constructed crime scene. Be sure to mark every step taken while working your way through the crime-scene area. Your aim is to disturb nothing while noticing everything necessary to solve the crime. Bag all your valuable clues for further analysis and discussion.

Our Crime Scene Forensics Track is an interactive experience. We create crime scenes for you to investigate, testing your knowledge as you acquire it. Learn analytical and deductive thinking skills while you move through scenarios that might just leave you scratching your head and wondering, “How was that possible?”

Dance Blend

What do you do when you hear a great rhythm or feel a driving beat? Dance, right? Could be some smooth steps or maybe an aerobic blast — hey, sounds like our Dance Blend!

This high-energy class is about creating original routines from basic dance techniques and your natural ability. We’ll collaboratively work out the choreography based on class makeup and interest. And we’ll cover dance anatomy and physiology, as well as warm-ups and the importance of stretching.

Look forward to fun when we take our new Dance Blend routine on stage for a final performance!

DJ Scratch & Mix

Come and make your own breaks in the beat to create your own version of a hit song. You'll be pulling records and working a driving beat by learning aggressive risky mixing techniques. Refine your skills with baby scratches, forwards, chirps and scribbles.

Drawing in Pencil & Ink

With a sheet of paper and a pencil or pen at the ready, you stand poised to create. Perhaps you have the ability to capture reality and reveal its beauty simply by allowing us to see it. Or maybe you enjoy the freedom of creating at will and making a new world that is solely a realm of your imagination.

This class is aimed at drawing the best out of you, whether you’ve sketched for years or only use a pencil to fill in multiple choice tests. Our art teachers work one on one, based on your ability, to pose the creative challenges and develop the drawing skills that will let you express your creativity.

Drum Circle

Come and experience the hypnotic atmosphere of a drum circle. We’ll teach you drumming techniques for hand drumming, approaches to rhythm, tempo and improvisation, and give you time for creative expression during the freestyle session. If you feel like exploring the possibilities of making music with percussion instruments, join us for some inspired, creative group drumming.

Fashion Design

Do you look at the latest fashions from the top designers and wish you could create those kinds of designs and outfits? Well, here's the place to get started.

You'll begin with your own concept, then step by step turn it into a completed piece. Working individually with your instructor, you'll learn how to illustrate your design, choose the color and fabrics to make it work, and put it all together in a finished garment or accessory.

Students will be taught different hand-sewing techniques. But whether you sew it, zip it, tape it or glue it, you’re sure to create a fashion design that’s uniquely you. More serious fashionistas should consider the Fashion Design Focus Track.

Fencing

When you hear the word “swordplay,” what images come to mind? The swashbuckling Three Musketeers? Armor-clad knights clanging heavy broadswords along castle walls or on fields of battle? Here’s another approach.

This class will introduce you to the ancient, elegant sport of fencing, in which opponents salute, go on guard and sustain an intense, strenuous, graceful dialogue through their gestures and weapons. Classes will cover footwork, blade work, strategy, training drills and exercises.

Handbag Design & Creation

If you've ever struggled to find the perfect bag to match your outfit, this is the class for you. See your ideas go from concept to final production. Students will design and create their own handbags with fabrics and materials as varied as stone-washed denim and embroidered floral prints. After choosing colors, textures, patterns and details, you can accent your handbag with studded trim and velvet ribbon to make a statement of your own!

Introduction to Guitar

How many times have you said, “I’d like to learn to play the guitar”? More than a few? Really mean it? Well, here’s your chance to get started this summer.

This is an introductory course, so everybody is going to be starting at the beginning. We”ll learn how to play chords, strum the guitar, play melodies and more. If you’ve got a guitar, bring it; otherwise use one of ours.

Introduction to Psychology

Are you a people-watcher? Often find yourself wondering why they act — or interact — the way they do? Simply, what makes them tick? Now’s the time to find out!

This workshop focuses on the nature and dimensions of human behavior, as well as the methods and issues involved in its study. Course topics include the how and the why of certain psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, attention-deficit, and eating disorders; social behavior; and perspectives on personality and perception. Join us in studying that most interesting and complicated subject: ourselves.

Inventions

Imagine you’re given an odd assortment of materials — nuts and bolts, sheets of wood, you name it — could you make something? Something practical that people might actually use?

This class will teach you to think outside of the box or, maybe, how to recreate the box. We’ll look at past and recent inventions, how they came about and how they’ve changed the world. We’ll also spend time creating our own inventions and exploring the creative process.

Job Cache

Starting your professional life can seem like a mystery. Once you know what you want to do, how do you get on the career path? Where’s the on-ramp to the fast track? Fortunately, Job Cache provides real-world direction and advice.

Let Job Cache be your guide to the job market this summer. Come learn about specific careers and what the actual work entails. Find out what education, skills and experience you’ll need, projected salary ranges, and the prospects for that field in the foreseeable future.

Journalism

This just in: There’s an art to pounding out a news story on deadline. For example, is your mind agile enough to find a fresh slant on a story? During an interview, do you know to push the envelope without losing the interviewee?

We’re going to give you your own Krinsky News byline to hone your writing skills as you publish your thoughts and opinions. We’ll create a newspaper that will be printed and distributed on the last day of the session. So please feel welcome to join your fellow newshawks and media mavens as a staff writer, editor or publisher.

Large Canvas Painting

Rich, expansive, and exploding with color — have you ever had feelings so strong that only a really big canvas could contain them? Or sentiments so subtle that only watercolors could express your mood? Bring that passion to this class. Capture your emotions as truth, paint the landscape that speaks to your heart, or detail the “real you” in a self-portrait. With the encouragement, expertise and guidance of our talented staff, you’ll go beyond the basics to expand on your creativity and discover your own personal artistic vision.

Mock Law

We’ve all seen enough trials on TV and in the movies to deserve an honorary law degree. But do you have the desire and aptitude to stand alone in front of judge and jury pleading a case?

This class will introduce you to courtroom procedures. In our mock trials, you’ll develop a knowledge and sense of how cases are determined. You may find yourself in any role from lawyer or judge to plaintiff or member of the jury. If you enjoy the intricate workings of the law, just wait until Court Krinsky is in session.

Personality Investigation

Want to know what a formal personality test would say about you? Why you see the world from a particular point of view, find certain people attractive and can’t stand others? How about figuring out what type of work or occupation would best suit your personality?

Come and learn about several types of personality tests. You’ll have a chance to take the tests, compare their results and see if they’re consistent. And you’ll have to decide whether you agree with their assessments. So are you a Workaholic Type A, Socialite Sanguine or something else? Let’s find out!

Photography

One of our most popular workshops, this class teaches a broad range of fundamental photographic skills. You’ll learn how to use a 35mm film or digital camera, compose an image, process film and print photos. We’ll cover concepts such as using shutter speed to freeze action, varying depth of field according to your subject, and controlling light for special effects. Then we’ll move into the “digital darkroom” to work on manipulating images with Photoshop software. Classes combine hands-on work with demonstrations and discussions of shooting and developing techniques.

Public Speaking and Debate

Do you enjoy an intelligent difference of opinion and know how to make your point? Or do you sometimes feel unarmed in a battle of wits?

Debating is the way people try to convince others to accept a given proposition or point of view. To do this, you have to communicate effectively while speaking in public. This course combines public speaking techniques with the art of debating to give you the tools to persuade others. By the end of the session, you’ll feel more confident when called on to speak about any topic, in any forum.

Radio Broadcasting

Join our in-house DJ at the controls of Radio Krinsky to record talk shows, music, commercials — the gamut of radio programming.

You’ll learn how to write a radio script, sequence and fade songs to create a seamless flow of music, and keep the show moving in the face of technical problems. Each student will have an opportunity to broadcast their show at camp and experience the thrill of on-air stardom.

Robotics

Come and create your own robot. While you’re piecing together your masterbot you’ll also be learning about basic electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science and design. Meanwhile you’ll decide what your Bot looks like, how it moves and how fast it’ll be able to go.

So if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at creating mechanized "life," join us in the laboratory for a session of Robotics.

Scent Science

It seems like every other day another celebrity releases their new perfume or cologne. Well, what about yours? Welcome to Scent Science, where we make perfumes or colognes that smell the way you want them to. Join us in an exploration of the perfumer’s art and the science of producing an alluring, delicate fragrance.

The Science of Soda

Sure, you’ve probably enjoyed a lot of sodas. But have you ever considered making your own brand of soda? In this hands-on class you’ll experiment with flavors, coloring, sweeteners and proportions as we try to concoct the next soft drink sensation. Krinsky Cola, anyone?

Sculpture

Among all the arts, what gives sculpture its unusual power? Could it be its depth, literally, its additional dimension? And what can that mean to your art?

In this course, we’ll consider the perception of space and objects around us. You’ll start with your own ideas and translate them directly into 3-dimensional reality. Your personal style and point of view will be translated into form as you create your own sculptures using either clay and wood or various art plastics and metals.

Self Defense

Is that person following you a threat? Do city streets make you a little nervous? Here’s where you learn how to take action.

Awareness and street-smart common sense are the keys to protecting yourself. This class will teach you how to read a situation and react early, or defend yourself when your options are limited. Use the weapons that are available to you: your voice, hands, feet, keys and more. Become less vulnerable and more confident with our eye-opening approach.

Storyboarding

The first step in the production of a video, TV commercial or movie, the storyboard depicts changes of scene and action and is used to explain the project to everyone from actors to costume designers, camera operators and producers. It is the simplest distillation of the story and in many ways the most important.

If you want to make films or videos, storyboarding is a valuable skill. No drawing required; we'll let the computer do that. But bring your creativity and imagination as we learn how to tell our story through a sequence of striking images.

Strategies of Warfare

In their headquarters far behind the lines, generals plan an offensive to turn the tide of war with the fewest casualties. In the ensuing battle, an individual unit works its way through a mine field under fire, unsure of their objective and facing certain losses. How well each team does its job will affect not only the individual soldiers’ fates but also the foreseeable future for the combatant nations, the region and possibly the world. Clearly, it’s something to think about.

This class will examine the theory and practice of war, specifically how it has been thought about, planned for, and executed over the last two decades.

Videography

Have you ever thought you could make a better music video or advertisement than the one you just saw? Or visualized filming your own real-life drama?

Here’s your chance to do just that. Sign up for this workshop and in just a couple of weeks you’ll be shooting and producing short films using industry-standard techniques. At the end of the session, you’ll have your own video to keep, starring you and your friends.

Web Page Design

If you intend to become a credentialed webmaster or online publisher or just want to post your own homepage, this is the course for you.

Through a series of hands-on lessons, you’ll acquire the essential tools and skills needed to build web pages. The pages you create will include graphics, animation, sound, video, forms, mouseovers, scrolling banners and more. Coursework includes an introduction to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), scanning, creating graphics, and audio and video compression for the web.

World History and Politics

This course will survey the progress of human development around the globe. Together, we’ll follow the rise and fall of civilizations, marvel at the establishment of social orders, and trace their successes and failures. Join us as we seek to interpret the human journey from primordial caves to the steel and glass canyons of the modern metropolis.

Yoga for Endurance & Strength

See how graceful and flexible your body can become. Create strength, stamina and total-body conditioning while going through a thoroughly enjoyable process of self-discovery.

Yoga for Relaxation

In this class you’ll learn the joys of stretching, relaxing, breathing and meditating. Our stress-busting workout will calm and rejuvenate you, yet leave you wonderfully energized. Whatever your aspirations or level of experience — come and be.
