Senior Enrichment Discovery Tracks

Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs

The Discovery Track offers dozens of classes covering an incredibly wide range of interesting subjects. This is your chance to explore new ideas, skills and experiences in a friendly atmosphere of discovery and growth. Why not try something for the first time? We have several groups for each class and will make sure you’re in the right one for your level of experience.

In the morning, campers have the option of taking either FOUR Discovery Tracks or TWO Discovery Tracks and ONE Focus Track. Morning classes meet for 90 minutes per day on either Monday, Wednesday and Friday (MWF), or Tuesday and Thursday (TTh). When combining Discovery Tracks with a Focus Track, please be sure to select courses on alternate days. Campers choose their Morning Discovery courses for the full session while completing their application.

Each week, all students will choose two Exploration Workshops — offered from 1:00 to 2:30 — from a list that changes weekly. Take your morning program a little further, or try something completely different. It’s all up to you. Have questions? Just give us a call. Click here for a course list: Exploration Workshops.

Art: Drawing & Painting

No experience needed — just open eyes and an open mind! Have you ever wondered how an artist sees the world and then gets it down on paper or canvas? Let’s find out together!

This track is a crash course in artistic vision and skills. First, we’ll develop our awareness of shape and form, using sketching pencils and charcoal to do gesture and contour drawings. We’ll experiment with all kinds of media — from ink and pastels to anything we find in the studio. You’ll learn a variety of watercolor techniques, including wet-in-wet, blooms, and how salt and plastic wrap can be used to create texture. Next up: working with acrylics, as we produce a large masterpiece with a contemporary twist. Come and take a risk — express yourself through art.

Art: Sculpture

Have you ever wanted to experiment with sculpture and find out what the expressive power of depth and dimension can give to your art?

In this course, we’ll explore the perception of space and objects around us. You’ll start with your own ideas and translate them directly into 3-dimensional reality. Your personal style and point of view will take shape as you create your own sculptures using either clay and wood or various art plastics and metals.

Ballroom Dancing

There are a lot of great reasons to take Ballroom Dancing: school dances, family celebrations and weddings, to name a few. At every one of them you're going to want to step onto the dance floor with confidence. This class will teach you the basic steps and turns in Swing, Mambo, Waltz, Cha-Cha, and other dances. Another reason to do it? More fun than you ever imagined! Join us and find out.

Chess

Come play the world’s most popular board game, while learning winning tactics, precise terminology and the finer points of strategy.

We’ll teach you the classic openings, middle-game variations and tactical maneuvers like the “pin,” which prevents your opponent from moving one piece without leaving too many others vulnerable, and the “fork,” a gambit that forces your opponent to sacrifice one of two threatened pieces.

Best of all, you’ll get to play the game against a variety of opponents. So come and challenge your new friends for the chance to have the final word: “Checkmate!”

Coffee House Philosophy

What do a double foam latte with chocolate sprinkles on top and Plato's “Republic” have in common? Deep isn't it? How about an iced mocha arctic freezer with cream and extra cocoa and Nietzsche's “Beyond Good and Evil”? Starting to get the idea? They're all part of Coffee House Philosophy, our synthesis of great tastes and great minds.

We're going to discuss the big ideas: What is beauty? Should sex and violence be allowed in movies, on TV and the web? Even, what is the meaning of Life? We'll consult the works of influential philosophers and share our own ideas - all stimulated by an exotic cup of joe. Join us for new flavors in coffee and thought.

Comic Book Design

Do you like the hard, sharp style of “X-Men” and “Justice League,” with their strong use of color and exciting stories, or does the humor of “Calvin & Hobbes” or “Garfield” appeal to you more? Either way, you’re bound to enjoy this immersion in the exaggerated universe of cartoons and comics.

This is a hands-on class designed to bring out the writer and/or illustrator in everyone who enjoys comics. We’re going to create our own cartoons and comic strips using either your original drawings or images we find in print or on the Web. You’ll work individually or as part of a team to devise the story line, write the joke or caption, and put the script and images together for something entirely new.

Cooking Fast, Fresh and Fun

Chanterelle or shiitake? Couscous or coulis? Thyme or tarragon? Which is it? Or try this one: What type of restaurant are you in if you’re ordering Coconut Panna Cotta? Here’s where you’ll find out.

If you like food, you’ll love our Cooking Track. We’ll turn you on to new and unusual foods, and teach you about their availability, freshness and preparation. You’ll watch our expert chefs at work and, best of all, sample the tasty results. Plus, for students wanting a little hands-on experience, there will be opportunities to assist in the demonstrations.

Creative Writing

Do you enjoy keeping a diary, writing letters to friends, or even working on stories in your spare time? Or do you just really love to read, and think writing might be fun?

This course is designed to provide a stimulating environment for beginning or more advanced writers. We’ll work on literary technique and style, and look at successful authors to see how they did it. During class, group collaboration and role playing will provide material for characters, plots, scenes and dialogue.

Start by making a note to try Creative Writing. We’ll help you learn to think like a writer and develop ideas inspired by the world around you.

Crime Scene Forensics

Put on your surgical gloves as your team enters our constructed crime scene. Be sure to mark every step taken while working your way through the crime-scene area. Your aim is to disturb nothing while noticing everything necessary to solve the crime. Bag all your valuable clues for further analysis and discussion.

Our Crime Scene Forensics Track is an interactive experience. We create crime scenes for you to investigate, testing your knowledge as you acquire it. Learn analytical and deductive thinking skills while you move through scenarios that might just leave you scratching your head and wondering, “How was that possible?”

Dance Blend

What do you do when your favorite artist comes on the radio or you download a new song? Dance, right? This could be some basic steps or the choreography from your favorite music video — just like our Dance Blend!

This high-energy class is about creating original routines from basic dance techniques and your natural ability. We’ll collaboratively work out the choreography based on class makeup and interest. And we’ll cover dance anatomy and physiology, as well as warm-ups and the importance of stretching.

Look forward to fun when we take our new Dance Blend routine on stage for a final performance!

DJ Scratch & Mix

Come and make your own breaks in the beat to create your own version of a hit song. You'll be pulling records and working a driving beat by learning aggressive risky mixing techniques. Refine your skills with baby scratches, forwards, chirps and scribbles.

Fashion Design

Do you look at the latest fashions from the top designers and wish you could create those kinds of designs and outfits? Well, here's the place to get started.

You’ll begin with your own concept, then step by step turn it into a completed piece. Working individually with your instructor, you’ll learn how to illustrate your design, choose the color and fabrics to make it work, and put it all together in a finished garment or accessory.

Campers will be taught different hand-sewing techniques. But whether you sew it, zip it, tape it or glue it, you’re sure to create a fashion design that’s uniquely you. More serious fashionistas should consider the Fashion Design Focus Track.

Fencing

When you hear the word “swordplay,” what images come to mind? The swashbuckling Three Musketeers? Armor-clad knights clanging heavy broadswords along castle walls or on fields of battle? Here’s another approach.

This class will introduce you to the ancient, elegant sport of fencing, in which opponents salute, go on guard and sustain an intense, strenuous, graceful dialogue through their gestures and weapons. Classes will cover footwork, blade work, strategy, training drills and exercises.

Game Programming

Great computer games don’t just jump from your mind to your computer. In fact, many game developers consider programming to be one of the last (and easiest) parts of the game development process. Even the simplest games, like Tetris or Pong, were planned extensively, without a computer, before a single line of code was written. So, grab your pencil and paper and let’s get started. Characters, conflicts, environments and playability — it’s all up to you. Then it’ll be onto your keyboard to program your very own game creation.

Introduction to Guitar

How many times have you said, “I’m going to learn to play the guitar”? Really mean it? Here’s your chance to get started this summer.

This is an introductory course, so everybody is going to be starting at the beginning. Come and learn how to tune the instrument, play chords, and melodies and more. If you’ve got a guitar, bring it; otherwise use one of ours.

Introduction to Psychology

Are you a people-watcher? Often find yourself wondering why they act — or interact — the way they do? Simply, what makes them tick? Now’s the time to find out!

This workshop focuses on the nature and dimensions of human behavior, as well as the methods and issues involved in its study. Course topics include the how and the why of certain psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, attention-deficit, and eating disorders; social behavior; and perspectives on personality and perception. Join us in studying that most interesting and complicated subject: ourselves.

Journalism

This just in: There’s an art to pounding out a news story on deadline. For example, how do you find a fresh slant on a story? During an interview, do you know to ask the tough questions without losing the interviewee?

We’re going to give you your own Krinsky News byline to hone your writing skills as you publish your thoughts and opinions. We’ll create a newspaper that will be printed and distributed on the last day of the session. So please feel welcome to join your fellow newshawks and media mavens as a staff reporter, writer, editor or publisher.

Mock Law

We’ve all seen enough trials on TV and in the movies to deserve an honorary law degree. But do you have the desire and aptitude to stand alone in front of judge and jury pleading a case?

This class will introduce you to courtroom procedures. In our mock trials, you’ll develop a knowledge and sense of how cases are determined. You may find yourself in any role from lawyer or judge to plaintiff or member of the jury. If you enjoy the intricate workings of the law, just wait until Court Krinsky is in session.

Photography

One of our most popular workshops, this class teaches a broad range of fundamental photographic skills. You’ll learn how to use a 35mm film or digital camera, compose an image, process film and print photos. We’ll cover concepts such as using shutter speed to freeze action, varying depth of field according to your subject, and controlling light for special effects. Then we’ll move into the “digital darkroom” to work on manipulating images with Photoshop software. Classes combine hands-on work with demonstrations and discussions of shooting and developing techniques.

Photoshop Essentials

Do you like to Photoshop pictures to create a whole new image, idea, experience, world or visual joke? Would you like to know how?

Adobe Photoshop is the digital imaging software of choice for professional and amateur artists, illustrators, photographers and creative professionals everywhere.

This class will teach you the tricks of the trade and let you hone your skills while you learn and play — whether it’s Photoshop Tennis (shooting an image back and forth across email) or Team Photoshop, a collaboration project with a class member.

Pilates

Get a lean dancer’s body by learning the methods developed by Joseph Pilates, and taught at studios around the country. This mind-body system integrates the whole self, emphasizing core strength, muscle balance, breathing and alignment.

Public Speaking and Debate

Do you enjoy an intelligent difference of opinion and know how to make your point? Or do you sometimes feel unarmed in a battle of wits?

Debating is the way people try to convince others to accept a given proposition or point of view. To do this, you have to communicate effectively while speaking in public. This course combines public speaking techniques with the art of debating to give you the tools to persuade others. By the end of the session, you’ll feel more confident when called on to speak about any topic, in any forum.

Radio Broadcasting

Join our in-house DJ at the controls of Radio Krinsky to record talk shows, music, commercials — the gamut of radio programming.

You’ll learn how to write a radio script, sequence and fade songs to create a seamless flow of music, and keep the show moving in the face of technical problems. Each student will have an opportunity to broadcast their show at camp and experience the thrill of on-air stardom.

Self-Defense

Is that person following you a threat? Does walking alone in an unfamiliar area make you a little nervous? Here’s where you learn how to take action.

Awareness and street-smart common sense are the keys to protecting yourself. This workshop will teach you how to read a situation and react early, or defend yourself with the weapons that are available to you: your voice, hands, feet, keys and more. Become less vulnerable and more confident through our eye-opening approach.

Soccer

Whether you’re a striker, defender or goalkeeper, stay on your toes as we get serious about soccer this summer.

Our international coaches will give you high-level training to hone your individual dribbling, passing and ball-handling skills. Plus they’ll work on team concepts with you and your fellow students from around the world to make you a better individual and team player.

Squash

Squash is an indoor racquet sport in which both players alternate hitting shots against the front and side walls. If you like fast-paced action, then this is a great sport for you. All levels are welcome.

Web Page Design

If you intend to become a credentialed webmaster or online publisher or just want to post your own homepage, this is the course for you.

Through a series of hands-on lessons, you’ll acquire the essential tools and skills needed to build Web pages. The pages you create will include graphics, animation, sound, video, forms, mouseovers, scrolling banners and more. Coursework includes an introduction to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), scanning, creating graphics, and audio and video compression for the web.

Yoga

See how graceful and flexible your body can become. Create strength, stamina and total-body conditioning while going through a thoroughly enjoyable process of self-discovery.

You’ll learn the joys of stretching, relaxing, breathing and meditating. Our stress-busting workout will calm and rejuvenate you, yet leave you wonderfully energized. Whatever your aspirations or level of experience — come and be.
